My path to Yoga

Joe Mattia was first introduced to yoga in 2008 by a new friend who is now his fiancé. By early 2009, a 16 week beginner series laid the foundation. Globetrotting in the following years, Joe explored his practice… meditating on the windy beaches of Morocco, perched in bakasana next to the largest seated Buddha in Lantau, Hong Kong and beyond. Yearning to explore the depths of a Yogic way of life, he set out for a one month long intensive Yoga teacher training at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, in November of 2009. One year after graduating Joe immersed once again as staff of the 200 hour Training at Kripalu. Although Joe did not plan to teach, an opportunity came to him in early 2010 to teach a weekly class at the Hindu Temple in Galloway NJ. Joe’s passion is to inspire those in his presence with a sense of genuine positive reflection and the knowing that we, as one are infinite, eternal and whole.

Joe largely attributes his spiritual cultivation to his beloved Amma, an Indian spiritual and humanitarian leader, also known as “the hugging saint.” After receiving darshan from Amma, Joe continues to embody her message, to “love and serve”. As life flows in the direction of his ever-expansive Yoga practice, the doors that have opened along the way have included: A clear path towards the disciplined style of Jivamukti Yoga and the preparatory stages of the 300 hour teacher training. Joe and Lana, his fiancé, have co-taught- and continue to teach students of Buena High School, and are currently expanding to other local high schools. Joe and Lana devote much of their time together immersed the study and practices of Tantra Yoga. They anticipate further training with TantraNova. Joe continues to take workshops and classes everywhere he travels, exploring the depth of his practice and teachings.
